The Psalms

Do you want to be thoroughly equipped for everything that life throws your way?

The Apostle Paul told his young friend, Timothy that, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

One exciting section of the Bible that deserves another look is God’s songbook, the Psalms. Many of these songs, written by the warrior, David, tell it like it is, don’t pull any punches, and are certainly not what most people would think of as polite “religion.”  But, nevertheless, God gave us these songs so that we could learn how to sing and pray like thoroughly equipped warriors in an often crazy and unsettled world.

“Whenever the Psalms are abandoned, an incomparable treasure vanishes from the Christian church. With their recovery will come unsuspected power.”  – Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Select the chapter number below for a study guide for each Psalm.  These studies are intended for your use in personal or group study.  We pray that the Holy Spirit will renew your mind through the study of His word.

Usage Suggestion:  We have successfully used these study guides by opening the class with discussion and prayer requests.  Pray over those requests, the leader, and invite the Holy Spirit to be present and lead the class.  The leader reads the forward of the study (the material before the table, if any).  Read through the entire chapter in the left column.  Then read through the right column while interactively discussing the scripture.  When finished with the right hand column, read the material after the table and discuss.  Follow with a hymn or the song provided and close with prayer.  Enjoy!
