In response to Jesus insightful answer, the woman said, “I know that Messiah comes, he who is called Christ. When he has come, he will declare to us all things.” To which Jesus responded, quoting from the Name of God used in Exodus 3:4, ego eimi, I Am he.
With that revelation, the woman was filled with wonder and excitement. She left her water pot and ran back into town telling everyone, “Come, see a man who told me everything that I did. Can this be the Christ?” They went out of the city, and were coming to him.
Like our Savior, Christians should have compassion on everyone. Christians are never to condemn. Rather, like our Savior we are to offer life. We do not know the intimate secrets of their lives like Christ does, but we do know that many of the people that we meet along the way do not know what they are looking for, nor how to find what they are looking for. They are going down many roads seeking meaning in their lives. They may be seeking relief from guilt and sorrow. They may be seeking relief from addictions or homelessness. They may be seeking peace and joy. They are certainly seeking freedom from the fear of death that only comes from God through the forgiveness of their sins. And with forgiveness comes a sense of belonging, finally coming home to God’s family, being reconciled to God. Like the woman at the well, they are looking for that one thing which can fulfill their lives, the I Am that alone can freely offer living water, Jesus Christ, their Creator.
