Jude 17-23

The Call to Persevere

17 But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold.  18 They said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.” 19 These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.

These scoffers who have no respect for the Word of God, have infiltrated the church for the sole purpose of using the Saints to satisfy their own ungodly desires.

? Can you think of anyone or any teaching causing division in the church today?

2 Peter 2:1  But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.

2 Timothy 4:3  For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

I Corinthians 14:37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

I John 4:6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

To counter these false shepherds the church is instructed to:

20 But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,  21 keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.

22 Be merciful to those who doubt;  23 save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear — hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh

1. Build:  I Thessalonians 5:11 encourage one another and build one another up. Hebrews 10:24 Consider how to stir up one another to love and good works.

2. Pray:  Ephesians 6:18  pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.

3. Keeping yourselves in God’s love as you await his return:  John 14:15-18  “If you love me, keep my commands.  16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.  18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

4. Merciful to those who doubt:  James 1:2-6 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.  Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.  But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

5. Save others: Those within the church who have been swayed by these false teachers are in danger of the fires of hell.

Galatians 1:6-9  I am astonished that you are quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.  But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.  As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.

6. Show Mercy:  Luke 15:4-7  “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?  And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’  I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

Ephesians 5:1 Be imitators of God, as beloved children.

7. Hating:  Psalm 97:10 Let those who love the Lord hate evil.

Psalm 139:21 Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord? Do I not abhor those who are in rebellion against you?
