Job 25:1 Then Bildad the Shuhite answered,
2 “Dominion and fear are with him.
He makes peace in his high places.
3 Can his armies be counted?
On whom does his light not arise?
4 How then can man be righteous before God?
Or how can he who is born of a woman be clean?
5 Behold, even the moon has no brightness,
and the stars are not pure in his sight;
6 How much less man, who is a worm,
the son of man, who is a worm!”
Bildad challenges Job to rethink his claims to innocence by asking:
How then can man be righteous before God?
Or how can he who is born of a woman be clean? v.4
How would you answer that question?
Do you remember the previous statement of faith that Job had explained to Bildad?
First, Job had appealed to God for a Mediator, Job 9:33, to represent and reconcile him to God.
Then later he said,
I know that my Redeemer lives.
In the end, he will stand upon the earth.
After my skin is destroyed,
then I will see God in my flesh. Job 19:25-26
Bildad, like many people today in our world, failed to understand that while it is true that we are worms v.6, sinful in thought, word, and deed, we can be made righteous before God because God provided us with a Redeemer.
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.” He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit. Galatians 3:13-14
